Nioxin®, a well-known hair loss treatment brand purports to "give you thicker, denser-looking hair in 30 days". However, in the absence of any scientifically-validated research, we cannot discern an objective basis for such a claim. We are particularly mystified by a Nioxin® treatment that advertises "dermabrasion" as a means to engender healthier fuller hair.
Dermabrasion, is primarily defined as a type of surgical skin planning that has been practiced for many years (before the advent of lasers) and involves the controlled deeper abrasion (wearing away) of the upper to mid layers of the skin with any variety of strong abrasive devices including a wire brush, diamond wheel or fraise, sterilized sandpaper, salt crystals, or other mechanical means. Having been in the hair loss research field for a mere twenty years we must confess ignorance to how dermabrasion might stimulate hair growth. We may be missing a key feature in Nioxin's program here, but it seems to us that such an approach to stimulating hair growth would seem to have the opposite affect.
A useful paradigm in this discussion is hair loss associated with wearing of wigs, AKA 'hair replacement systems'. Anyone who has worn one of these contraptions can tell you that the infernal things cause hair loss. Hair replacement systems cause hair loss specifically by rubbing the scalp, thereby inducing inflammation and damaging the underlying sensitive structures that make up the living hair follicle. Once again, we may be missing a key feature of Nioxin's dermabrasion-based hair growth treatment system. We would be quite interested to see the data should such ever be submitted for peer review.
It is useful to point out that the gentle, non-invasive drug-free formulations comprising the HairGenesis® product line have been successfully tested under numerous well-designed studies, including peer-reviewed, IRB-monitored, placebo-controlled, double blind conditions. Additionally, HairGenesis® is supported with an ongoing R&D infrastructure which has resulted in the development of seven generations of continually-improved formulations.
Partnering with university-based research collaborators at State University, New York (SUNY) and elsewhere, HairGenesis® has developed proprietary systems wherein a dual-mechanism of action means that our formulations work in multiple ways to protect and revitalize thinning scalp hair. We've also pioneered a proprietary delivery system to optimize the efficiency by which the active substances are taken up by the target hair follicles. We've also backed our hypothesis with critically peer-reviewed and published data. And there are also patents pending on the discoveries we've made.
Of note, our latest formulas have been shown to block micro-inflammation of the hair follicle as well as inhibit the negative consequences of 5 alpha dihydrotestosterone -- a pathogenic metabolite of the steroid hormone testosterone (T). This means that HairGenesis® helps revitalize your hair in more than one way. While consistently excellent clinical results are now evident, because HairGenesis® is run by hair loss experts, not marketers, you can expect that as time passes, the results you achieve will continue to get even better.
